The Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) and NJSWEP are pleased to announce that our incredibly popular keystone event the “NJDEP Regulatory Update” will be held in Trenton this June.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) implements regulations and policies, which frequently evolve as priorities change. This one-day workshop will keep attendees informed about the NJDEP’s priorities and plans, as well as the status of existing programs, updates, and proposed legislative changes that are key to NJDEP programs.

NJDEP Assistant Commissioners from all programs will be present, including Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment (CSRR), Sustainable Waste Management, Watershed and Land Management, Air, Energy, and Materials Sustainability, Water Resources Management, and Community Investment and Economic Revitalization Projects and Funding Opportunities.

Continuing Education Credits:

We received approval from the The New Jersey Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board (“SRPL Board”) for 5.0 LSRP Regulatory Credits = NJSRPLB Course Number 2026-027

New this year: Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits are pending for attorneys who attend the event! It is anticipated that at least 5.6 CLE credits will be granted.

The environmental and brownfield job market is competitive. Whether you are just entering the field, five years in, or a seasoned senior professional, the ability to clearly articulate your value, differentiate yourself, and position strategically is what separates the professionals who advance from those who stall.

Most environmental professionals are excellent at the work. Far fewer are excellent at communicating what makes them irreplaceable.

In this lunch-and-learn, Jose Almanzar (environmental attorney, former environmental field scientist, and host of the Green Collar Careers Podcast) introduces the “Green Pivot Method,” a five-stage career positioning framework developed from dozens of conversations with environmental and brownfield professionals across every level of the field. Originally designed to help mid-career professionals break into environmental work, the framework has proven equally powerful as a tool for professionals already in the space who want to level up, pivot within the field, or simply get clearer on where they are headed and why.

Jose Almanzar is Senior Counsel at Holland & Knight, where he focuses on environmental law including brownfields due diligence, pre- and post-closing compliance, and related matters. He is a former environmental field scientist, a member of the Board of Trustees of The Nature Conservancy in New York, and a gubernatorial appointee to the New York State Adirondack Park Agency. He is the founder and host of Green Collar Careers, a podcast and platform helping professionals at every stage advance their environmental careers using his proprietary Green Pivot Method, validated by faculty at the Yale School of the Environment.

Ryotaro Tashiro (Economist from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia) will open the program with an economic outlook examining national, regional, and local economic trends, including factors influencing New Jersey’s development landscape. The discussion will include market conditions affecting industrial and residential sectors, workforce and demographic trends, and broader economic indicators shaping investment and redevelopment activity.

Powering Redevelopment: Brownfields and New Jersey’s Energy Future

This forward-looking panel will explore the rapidly changing energy landscape in New Jersey and the challenges and opportunities shaping redevelopment, infrastructure, and economic growth. Panelists will discuss identifying Brownfield sites that are suitable for redevelopment as an energy facility, in light of the following considerations:

Siting facilities: tax incentives and local appetite for energy facilities
Technical considerations: grid capacity constraints, grid augmentation by battery storage facilities, demand management, solar integration, and the growing divide between “power rich” and “power poor” regions across the state.
The conversation will likely include the feasibility of different renewable energy technologies, the expanding role of battery energy storage systems, emerging energy legislation, microgrids, distributed generation, and the significant electricity demand driven by AI, data centers, electrification, and new development.
