Environmental Data Management is the organized handling of environmental information to support sound decisions and regulatory compliance. Environmental Data is what we base our decisions on. It’s at the core of our businesses, applications, and technical practices. Good data governance practices start before the first pump is lowered down a well or the first auger string breaks ground. Environmental Data Management (EDM) is a complex topic that requires a depth of knowledge and skills from multiple backgrounds, but it doesn’t have to be overly difficult or utilize expensive software to manage and utilize.

This 1 hour presentation will demonstrate some tools and approaches used to set up environmental projects and present some specific examples of how prior planning can prevent poor performance or undesired outcomes later. It will also cover ways to scale your data management and analysis to the job at hand. Large and complex sampling programs benefit from a well-established data management program but what about that one-off job with only a handful of samples.

TOPIC - ADVOCACY, POLICY, AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT: UNDERSTANDING THE RULES AND NAVIGATING THE CONVERSATION

Nonprofits, professional associations, educational institutions, and private businesses all play an important role in educating the public and engaging in policy discussions — but the rules around political activity, advocacy, lobbying, and public engagement are often nuanced and misunderstood.

This timely discussion will explore the legal and practical boundaries organizations and individuals should understand when participating in public policy conversations, particularly during a midterm election year. Attendees will gain insight into what nonprofits, member organizations, construction firms, engineering companies, and other businesses can and cannot do when it comes to supporting or opposing legislation, engaging with elected officials, educating the public, or participating in political discourse.

The panel will also explore how organizations involved in government-funded programs like EPA Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund and grant applications can ensure communications, outreach, and advocacy efforts remain compliant and appropriately structured. A speaker from NJIT with expertise in EPA grant assistance programs will discuss best practices for maintaining clear boundaries and transparency throughout the grant application and implementation process.

Featuring communications expert Sam Biederman and grant expert Nat Francesco, the conversation will cover both organizational best practices and the personal realities of navigating political and policy conversations in professional settings, written documents, on social media, and in everyday interactions.

They will discuss:

The differences between advocacy, lobbying, political activity, and public education
What nonprofits, trade groups, educational institutions, and private businesses are permitted to do under the law
Best practices for public communications, educational programming, and policy engagement
Considerations for organizations involved in EPA and other government-funded grant programs
How to ensure grant-related outreach and public engagement efforts remain compliant and transparent
Navigating political discussions professionally and respectfully in the workplace and online
Understanding risks, boundaries, and reputational considerations during an election cycle

The Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) and NJSWEP are pleased to announce that our incredibly popular keystone event the “NJDEP Regulatory Update” will be held in Trenton this June.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) implements regulations and policies, which frequently evolve as priorities change. This one-day workshop will keep attendees informed about the NJDEP’s priorities and plans, as well as the status of existing programs, updates, and proposed legislative changes that are key to NJDEP programs.

NJDEP Assistant Commissioners from all programs will be present, including Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment (CSRR), Sustainable Waste Management, Watershed and Land Management, Air, Energy, and Materials Sustainability, Water Resources Management, and Community Investment and Economic Revitalization Projects and Funding Opportunities.

Continuing Education Credits:

We received approval from the The New Jersey Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board (“SRPL Board”) for 5.0 LSRP Regulatory Credits = NJSRPLB Course Number 2026-027

New this year: Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits are pending for attorneys who attend the event! It is anticipated that at least 5.6 CLE credits will be granted.

Ryotaro Tashiro will open the program with an overview of economic forecasting from the federal to state and local levels, and provide a market outlook on development trends, including industrial and residential sectors.

Through three focused panel discussions, we’ll cover:

Funding Forecasting

This panel will explore how federal priorities and broader economic trends are shaping brownfield redevelopment at the state level. Panelists will discuss EPA and other federal agency assistance, trends in state incentive programs and HDSRF funding, brownfield and infrastructure investment opportunities, coordination between state agencies and redevelopment stakeholders, and strategies for leveraging public funding to advance redevelopment projects.

Next Generation of Brownfields Redevelopment in NJ: Where are the Opportunities?

New Jersey's redevelopment landscape is evolving, and this panel will explore what those changes mean for the brownfield community. Topics will include the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan, Governor Sherrill's Executive Orders #4 and #5, NJDEP remedial and land use regulations, and other state policies that are expected to shape redevelopment and investment decisions for years to come.

Powering Redevelopment: Brownfields and New Jersey’s Energy Future

This panel will explore New Jersey's rapidly evolving energy landscape and the opportunities and challenges it presents for redevelopment, infrastructure, and economic growth. Discussion will focus on the state's energy needs, policies, and planning initiatives, as well as opportunities to repurpose brownfield sites for renewable energy and battery storage projects. Panelists will also examine project siting, permitting, and implementation; grid capacity and infrastructure considerations; local approval processes; and practical lessons learned from successful energy and redevelopment projects.
